At the European Athletics Championships, Iapichino never gives up: he wins silver on the last jump

In the women's long jump, the Florentine athlete is splendid second with 6,94 behind the unattainable German Mihambo

Rome, 12 June 2024 – With a capital performance, as a great athlete with great character, Larissa Iapichino wins a splendid second place in the long jump, with 6,94 behind the unattainable and phenomenal German Mihambo that jumps 7.22.

Iapichino slipped to fifth position and decided it on the last jump, after an initial 6,82, then 6,84 a null, 6,86 and 6,90. Portuguese De Sousa was third at 6,91, the same size as German Assani who came fourth. 

"It was difficult – says Larissa at the end of the match to Rai microphones – I was very good at staying on track. I started with a bit of cramps. I wanted to give something magical to this Roma. I always tried to bring out something in more. I did the best series of my career, I'm never satisfied, I want to improve. There were many friends from Florence who supported me, I thank the public, I hope I made them proud."

An exciting evening with Larissa who lights up the Olimpico, a prestigious result that confirms the extraordinary talent of an athlete who will turn 22 in July and has a great future.

The daughter of Gianni Iapichino (now her coach, former record holder and multiple Italian pole vault champion) and Fiona May (who won two world golds and two Olympic silvers in the long distance), reached this final after 6,71 in qualifying and a season best performance of 6,86. In her career, despite being very young, she has already shown the qualities of a champion, with an outdoor record of 6,95 and an indoor record of 6,97 (matched by mother Fiona's Italian record), a European title under 23 and one under 20 , a European indoor silver, a fifth place at the world championships.
