Brussels, 14 September 2024 – The strange (and in some ways unfortunate) season of Leonardo Fabbri it closes with an exploit that is worth the new Italian shot put record. The Florentine Fabbri gets the record during the second day of the Diamond League Finals in Brussels (Belgium).
The 27-year-old, European champion in Rome 2024 and runner-up in Budapest 2023, threw at his first attempt at 22,98 meters, improving by 3 centimeters his previous record set in Savona last May 15. Fabbri, a member of the Air Force, is also the new record of the meeting. In addition, and not secondary, there is Fabbri's victory in the Diamond League for the first time in his career. He beat the Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser (22,79). For Fabbri it is an excellent way to sweeten the Olympic disappointment.
Brilliant result also for Larissa Iapichino who, in the women's long jump, also wins the Diamond League with the measure of 6,80.
"I've been dreaming of this Diamond all my life - the words of Fabbri, who also wins the 30 thousand dollars of the prize and signs the record of a luxury meeting like the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels - I knew that the only way to beat Crouser would have been to shoot everything at the first throw, and so it was. It's nice to start the preparation again with important stimuli: I know I'm worth the European record but also the world record, and next year I'll try in every way, with the wonderful people I have around me everything is possible".
