Vollering wins the Tour de France Women, Van Vleuten retires

Demi Vollering, 26, of the SD Worx team, won the Tour de France women for the first time in her career. The final victory came after a hat-trick in the Ardennes classics. Lotte Kopecky and Katarzyna Niewiadoma, joint second.

Dutchwoman Demi Vollering won the women's Tour de France for the first time in her career, wearing the yellow jersey on Saturday in the Tourmalet stage and keeping it through the final stage, a 22-kilometer time trial won by Swiss Marlen Reusser in Pau. Vollering, 26, of the SD Worx team, succeeds her compatriot Annemiek van Vleuten, who announced her retirement at the end of the season. In the general classification, Vollering preceded Belgian Lotte Kopecky and Polish Katarzyna Niewiadoma, tied for second. With the success at the Tour, the Dutchwoman, world number one, has now won three times, having already achieved a hat-trick in the Ardennes classics.
