Ascoli, there is what can be saved. Among the worst seasons ever
Never so bad in the last 60 years: the hope is that the points average increases in this final part of the championship

In reality, here on the pages of Carlino we have been writing about it for a while, but we thought it was just a feeling, probably also due to the bitterness of having to write weekly about embarrassing performances, unthinkable results like the defeat in Pineto, and players inadequate for the category. Now, however, the numbers are coming to certify that this risks being the worst season of the last sixty years. As reported by the social group 'Ascoli – Operazione Nostalgia' on Facebook, this is currently the worst black and white team ever. Taking away the 2013/14 season, the one of bankruptcy and failed relegations, this turns out to be the worst season since 1959 and therefore the lowest point, sportingly speaking, in the ultra-centenary history of Picchio.
Going back in time, since reaching Serie C in the 1959/60 season, only on four other occasions has Ascoli Calcio had such a poor performance, always speaking of the third division. In the 1961/62 season: the Bianconeri placed 14th with 12 wins, 6 draws and 16 losses: average points of 1,24 per game. In the 1962/63 season: 13th with 10 wins, 10 draws and 14 losses: average points of 1,18 per game. In the 1996/97 season: eighth place with 10 wins, 13 draws and 11 losses, average points of 1,26 per game. The following year, 1997/98 season: tenth place with 8 wins, 17 draws and 9 losses, average points of 1,21 per game. This year, 2024/25 season, but we are still on the 33rd matchday so with five rounds to go Ascoli is in 15th place with 9 wins, 10 draws and 14 defeats, with the worst average points of 1,12 per game.
In short, it is confirmed that we currently have the worst Ascoli of the last sixty years. Needless to say, in these five days that are missing until the end of this 'heartbreaking' Serie C championship, we hope that the average points will be increased and above all that we will reach that salvation that was the minimum objective at the beginning of the season and that instead has become over the course of these months, the only possible one despite the changes of coaches and sports directors. And yet, it did not seem that this was an impossible championship. On the contrary. Apart from Virtus Entella and Ternana, we have not seen any irresistible teams and to reach the playoff objective, in truth still arithmetically reachable given the distance of only 4 points, it would have taken very little, but not for this Ascoli.
