Pep Guardiola
Manchester, 14 December 2024 – The main course of the next matchday Premier League It is definitely the Manchester derby between the Manchester City di Guardiola and the Manchester United di Amorim. In fact, at 17pm tomorrow, the two teams will take to the field atEtihad Stadium, in a match that cannot be classified as a simple “big match” of the Premier League. In all competitions, Manchester City and Manchester United have faced each other 194 times, with the red devils having the advantage in terms of total victories: 79 to 62 for the “reds” of Manchester, while there have been 53 draws. What makes this derby even more unique, moreover, is the fact that it is the only match between two teams from the same city that have been crowned both European champions, with the victory of the Champions League, and world champions, given that both teams boast a Club World Cup title won in their history. This fact of great prestige is shared only with the Milan derby, given that only Milan e Inter can boast a challenge in which both teams triumphed in both the Champions League and the Club World Cup.
The two teams are not coming to this match in the best way: the citizens, in fact, seem to have lost their way and are no longer able to find the right path. Since November, they have only won one championship, against Nottingham Forest, while the defeats were as many as four. In the last match, played at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace, the citizens did not go beyond a draw, while in their last Champions League outing against Juventus the 2-0 defeat arrived, which threw Guardiola and his team into even more despair. Furthermore, there is the spectre of the hearing for the 115 violations that hovers in the air, which cannot fail to influence the environment. A victory in an important challenge like the derby, therefore, becomes fundamental also from a psychological point of view, to recover from the negative moment that Manchester City is going through. On the other hand, however, there is Amorim's Manchester United, which has not yet found its dimension. Since his arrival, in fact, the former coach of Sporting Lisbon has collected a draw, a win and two defeats in the league, while in Europe Man United has achieved two victories. For now, the Amorim cure has worked halfway, with Manchester United in thirteenth place in the Premier League: a victory tomorrow, therefore, is not only essential for a question of the standings, but also to relaunch the European ambitions of the red devils.
