Club World Cup: Inter must do without Marcus Thuram

Seattle, June 20, 2025 – A match to win, to avoid the risk of early elimination. The draw with the Monterrey at the debut, Inter by Christian Chivu will face the Japanese of the on Saturday, in the Italian eveningUrawa Reds, defeated in the first match by 3-1 by River Plate. For the Nerazzurri there is already the need to earn three points to avoid finding themselves with their backs to the wall in the last match against the Argentines, which is also the most difficult of the group. For the new coach there is still the obstacle of another physical problem for Marcus Thuram, muscle fatigue, and the need to find a partner for Lautaro Martinez, plus the threat Galatasaray about Hakan Calhanoglu, who will probably start from the bench. Not an ideal situation for a match that could already be decisive, with River leading the group with 3 points, followed by Inter and Monterrey with 1 and Urawa at zero: a victory would allow the Nerazzurri to better manage the third and final match of the group, probably taking their destiny into their own hands.

The opponents

The Urawa Reds are a very successful team in Japan. The Saitama team has won the championship 5 times, but since it became professional, that is, in 1992, it has won it only once in 2006. Its presence at the World Cup is due to the success achieved in the Champions League AFC in 2023 over Al Hilal and in general the Reds have won that competition three times, confirming themselves as a team of international rank in that confederation. In the championship, however, the Urawa Reds are currently fourth, seven points behind the leaders Kashima (who have one game less).

Probable lineups

As mentioned, it shouldn't be a challenge Marcus Thuram, grounded by fatigue, so Esposito is a candidate to join the captain Lautaro in the classic 3-5-2 inherited from the Inzaghi era. In defense, Pavard, de Vrij and Bastoni, with Henrique and Dimarco as full-backs, while Asllani will be in control with Barella and Mkhitaryan on the sides. The Japanese should line up with 4-2-3-1 with Ishihara, Danilo, Boza and Ogiwara in front of Nishikawa, then Yasui and Gustafson in midfield, with Kaneko and Watanabe on the wings. In the middle, Savio as a link behind the striker Matsuo. INTER (3-5-2): Sommer; Pavard, De Vrij, Bastoni; Luis Henrique, Barella, Asllani, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; S. Esposito, Lautaro Martinez. Coach Chivu. URAWA RED DIAMONDS (4-2-3-1): Nishikawa; Ishihara, Danilo Boza, Hoibraaten, Ogiwara; Yasui, Gustafson; Kaneko, Savio, Watanabe; Matsuo. All. Skorza.
