Airspace closed after Israel's attack on Iran: Mehdi Taremi is stuck in his home country

Milan, 14 June 2025 – The conflict between Israel and Iran is also having repercussions on Inter. Mehdi Taremi, the Nerazzurri striker expected in the United States where he was supposed to play the Club World Cup together with his teammates, he was in fact unable to board the flight which was supposed to take him from Tehran to California.

Last Tuesday he played and won with the national team, scoring the second goal in the 3-0 win over North Korea in Mashhad. He was then supposed to move to the USA and meet the new coach, Cristian Chivu, but the evolution of the conflict has caused the closure of the airspace and at the moment it is excluded that the striker will be able to join the group for the rest of the competition.

A setback that creates numerical problems for the Inter coach, expected today at the presentation in a press conference (it is set for 23.15pm Italian time). The club has in fact just sold Joaquin Correa to Botafogo – a team that, moreover, will play the tournament in the USA – and has not called up Marko Arnautovic.

Both were out of contract on June 30, the management immediately tried to buy the Frenchman Bonny from Parma, but then preferred to take more time to work on the negotiation. At the moment, therefore, the offensive department consists of only Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram, plus Sebastiano Esposito (returned from the loan at Empoli where he was relegated to Serie B) and Valentin Carboni, out with a serious injury since last October. There is also Francesco Pio Esposito, 19 goals in the recently concluded cadet tournament with Spezia, but due to a knee problem he is not expected to recover before the end of the group stage.

Chivu therefore finds himself having to face an initial emergency, while Taremi immediately finds a snag on the road to a possible recovery. His first year with Inter was in fact very disappointing: 3 total goals, 1 only per tournament between the league, Champions League and Italian Super Cup. He still has one year left on his contract at 3 million net plus bonuses, which also makes finding a place complicated, especially in Europe where the striker would like to stay if the divorce with Inter were to happen.

His first option is actually to redeem himself. and demonstrate that he can still be the player admired at Porto, despite his almost 33 years of age (he will turn 18 on July XNUMX) and the great difficulties he encountered with the Nerazzurri.
