D'Aversa sacked by Lecce
Lecce, 11 March 2024 – Il Lecce he sacked the coach Roberto D'Aversa, protagonist of the violent and excited post-match event after the Sunday home defeat against Verona: the match ended with a brawl and a physical clash between the coach himself and the Scala forward Thomas Henry, hit by a headbutt.
La note from the Giallorossi club: "After the events that occurred at the end of the Lecce-Verona match, US Lecce announces that it has relieved coach Roberto D'Aversa of his duties. Thanks go to the coach and his staff for the work done."
With this short statement the club announces what was in the air, namely the dismissal of coach D'Aversa, already publicly condemned from the company on Sunday afternoon. A sort of necessary act, therefore, given that the Apulian club had considered the reaction of its coach, who later apologised, "contrary to the principles and values of sport".
The former Stuttgart-born midfielder, with a past on the benches of Parma and Sampdoria, leaves Lecce to sixth to last place in the standings with 25 points in 28 championship days, tied with Empoli.
On Monday afternoon the team will resume training in view of the next match against Salernitana. It remains to be seen who will lead the session. At the moment one of the most popular names for the Giallorossi bench seems to be that of Leonardo Semplici. News is expected in the next few hours.
