Torino unleashed, 47 years of waiting. There is always change at the top. Leader, a title that does not last

Juventus and Udinese have also been alone in the lead in the first five matchdays: Vanoli and Motta the only unbeaten with Empoli. From Chievo to Sassuolo, the illusion ends when the big teams wake up.

Seeing Torino alone at the top of the Serie A table, 47 years after the last time, is strange, but it is certainly something suggestive: it hasn't happened since 1977, and to claim that it was another world, and even another football, is a real consideration, but one that slips into rhetoric. Partly because at the time there were Roberto Mozzini, Eraldo Pecci, Claudio Sala, Ciccio Graziani and Paolino Pulici (with Gigi Radice on the bench), partly because the table after five days is the kingdom of the ephemeral.

Yet, in this championship, the standings have already produced three different leaders alone: Juventus after the second matchday (6 points), Udinese on the fourth (10), Torino today (11), after the third matchday at the top (7 points) was a quartet formed by the three teams mentioned above and the defending champion Inter. A rather interesting and not obvious turnover, considering that last season, after five matchdays, Inzaghi's team was already in the lead, with a clear run of only victories. Not this time, and so here is Juventus' escape after the victories with Como and Verona, immediately back with three 0-0 in a row with Roma, Empoli and Napoli; the epiphany of Runjaic's Udinese, completely unexpected leaders in the fourth round, then overtaken by an equally unpredictable Torino up there, but the Granata are among the only three teams still unbeaten, together with Thiago Motta's team and Empoli, and it's not just good luck.

It does not escape anyone, however, that it will only be a matter of time: Torino will return to the ranks, and some other leader - Napoli has the top spot in its sights - will take its place, alone or not, as the values settle. But the charm of the transitory remains, for the Granata who look down on everyone from above, just as in their first year in Serie A it also happened to Chievo: 2001-02 season, on matchday ten the Venetians were alone in first place with 23 points, 2 more than Inter, and that was also the season in which Malesani's Verona, after a first leg in the UEFA zone, ended up badly in Serie B at the end of the tournament. In November 2020, De Zerbi's Sassuolo was alone at the top of Serie A for a few days, and last season, in third place, with 11 points, was D'Aversa's Lecce, as high up as today's Empoli (same coach), then sucked into the quicksand of the lower table.

But, as long as he could, he dreamed, and dreaming costs nothing, if you wake up in time.
