Cycling, Uci announces a test on the limitation of ratios
But for President Lappartient the reliability of the results is in doubt: "Usually statistics are based on a volume of data, not on a single race"

David Lappartient (Ansa)
Rome, 21 April 2025 - Cycling and its ever-increasing speed which for some is the cause of the increase in falls: the topic has been much debated in winter, with wheels and pedals stationary, but even now, in the middle of spring, it is back in fashion and it does so when theUCI announces the experimentation of limiting relationships.
Lappartient's statements
Interviewed by the microphones of Ouest-France, David Lappartient, Chairman of the International Federation, he did not limit himself to presenting the news, but also to expressing his personal opinion on a request that important athletes had also supported, such as Wout van aert, in the face of less enthusiasm in this regard, for example, from a pure sprinter like Fabio Jacobsen or an experienced runner like Matteo Trentin. "The reduction of speed is a bit incompatible with a cycling race. Personally, I have many reservations about the limitation of gear ratios, considering that it could also change the characteristics of the riders, between those who are able to grind out more and those who can use large gear ratios". In fact, hard gear ratios do not necessarily correspond to a more effective pedalling, and vice versa, for a 'rolling' that often turns out to be very subjective. Not only that: many accidents in the race appear to be well unrelated to high speed, occurring more than anything else due to distractions or the presence of obstacles of various kinds on the road. And yet, lappart wants to pay attention to the pro-limitation current, announcing the novelty on the horizon (but not in the immediate future). "A test is planned for the end of the year, during a race. After that, what is complicated is to draw conclusions from a single event, even if it were a stage race, because, by definition, the statistics are based on the volume of data, not on a single race."
The Return of Cosnefroy
Then there are those who like Benoit Cosnefroy he has left not only this debate but also the entire circuit due to a physical ordeal that is set to end on the occasion of the imminent Tour of Romandie 2025, Scheduled 29th April al 4st May. Stop by August 31th, 2024 initially due to a broken collarbone, the runner of the Decathlon AG2R The World Team, who expressed his eagerness to return to the microphones of The Dauphine, he would then undergo an operation to solve a knee problem. "I will be in a stage race which will therefore subject me to less stress than a one-day race. There will be less waiting and, if necessary, also less difficulty in withdrawing. Then in Switzerland there are beautiful, well-paved roads with fewer urban settlements than in France o Belgium: it is the ideal environment for recovery". The rest of the 2025 of the Frenchman is for obvious reasons also a question mark. "I think we will decide day by day what to do. What interests me is to feel good and get back to feeling the adrenaline of the races, rediscovering those timeless moments in which something important is at stake in the final".
