After months of speculation and rumours, the Welshman confirmed his imminent retirement on his social media pages: "A very long journey, full of satisfaction and good memories"

Geraint Thomas (Ansa)
Rome, 17 February 2025 - The news had already been given in recent months, especially through its podcast, which was very popular in particular during the long winter without cycling, but now the news has been made official: Geraint Thomas will retire at the end of this season.
Thomas's announcement
The venue chosen for the official announcement is the social network X, via a long and intense post. "I thought it was time to make it official that this will be my last year. It hasn't been a bad journey. In fact, I never in my dreams would I have thought I would be a professional runner for 19 seasons. I will have a lot of time to think about it anyway: before that moment I have to think about many big races to prepare for". Among them, the one that will obviously stand out is the Tour de France, the Welshman's favourite race, which in 2018 saw him collect the most important result of an entire career full of laurels. "It was crazy to go up 5 times higher on the podium of a Great TourI came very close to winning the Giro d'Italia and then, of course, there's the Tour de France. As a kid I never thought I would be able to win it, or achieve many other results. This - continues Thomas - it will be a special year, of memories and of collecting photos and reflections along the way. But above all it will be a year of last times. The certainty is that I have made a beautiful journey since, in 21 years, I had introduced myself on the Tower Bridge like a kid who had absolutely no idea what was going to happen."
Ewan's statements
From a near end to a new beginning, even though in this case too the age is no longer very young: staying at home Ineos Grenadiers, the new face is called Caleb ewan, one of the latest transfer market movements that in its 2025 asks for answers and victories. "My hope for this year is to get back to my level. As always, I want to be at the top and win. I come from several complicated seasons and so I really hope this time to find the brilliance of the golden days". From words to deeds: the Australian is working with Mehdi Kordi, the new director of performance of the Ineos Grenadiers, even on the track to try to find himself again. "Since I became a professional I haven't raced so much on the track. It used to happen a lot at a youth level, but then I switched completely to the road. The track, however, remains my passion and returning there was nice, even more so because the goal is to find speed again. Unfortunately, compared to my colleagues I'm a little behind, because they have been working on this since December and I have been working on it for very little, but I think that all this can only do me good". In short, the new (and unexpected) marriage between Ewan , Ineos Grenadiers It seems to have been born late but under the best auspices. "I know I'm in one of the strongest teams in the world. I already knew it and now I've seen it and, even more so, I'm excited at the idea of debuting with this shirt".
