Great celebration for the British, who beats in the sprint an Almeida who is increasingly higher in the rankings, and the French, who steals the symbol of the primacy from his compatriot Grégoire, who today sank

Santa Maria (Switzerland), 19 June 2025 - The stage 5 it's that queen of Tour of Switzerland 2025, with 4 GPM first category to climb. It's a good day for Joao almeida continues his comeback operation: that's how it is, but this time the Portuguese has nothing to do with the victory, in addition to still missing the appointment with the yellow jersey. In order, they celebrate Oscar Onlyy e Kevin Vauquelin: the British, very unlucky in his career so far due to numerous injuries ('memorable' the 3 fractures to the collarbone in just 8 months), gets a great satisfaction by winning the tight sprint against the Portuguese and the Frenchman steals the symbol of the primacy from his compatriot Romain Gregoire, which soon founders, saying goodbye to the dreams of glory, which are instead still there, surprisingly, for a revived Julian Alaphilippe, today in second place in the general classification. With stages still to be run (above all the final time trial) and the legs shown, the impression is that the balance of predictions is starting to tip strongly towards Almeida, the usual Almeida which perhaps does not catch the eye as far as the show is concerned but which in the end, with its inexorable progression, is always there with the best. Even before the start of the stage, the day had opened with the inauguration of a memorial for Gino Mader in the place where in the 2023, on the descent of the Albula Pass, was involved in the accident that cost him his life on 16nd June: Marc Hirschi e Michael Shar, in the general emotion of former teammates of the Bahrain Victorious and colleagues in general, as well as family members of course, the task of lifting the veil on the sculpture located near the starting point today. The stage 6, the Chur-Neuhausen am Rheinfall di 186,7 km, despite 2 GPM second category to climb in a very undulating first part of the track and 2.391 meters of altitude difference, will bring back into fashion the sprinters who remained in the group, in truth few, before the most awaited men return to the scene at the weekend, ready to compete for the yellow jersey which from today belongs to vauquelin.

The chronicle of stage 5 of the Tour of Switzerland 2025

The race starts again from The Punt-Santa Maria: 183,5 km and other 4 GPM to climb, all first category, including the one at the finish, with a total difference in altitude of 3.620 metersThe escapees of the day are bilbao hair (Bahrain Victorious), Nelson Powless (EF Education-Easy Post), Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana Team), Javier Romo (Movistar Team) e Alexander Vlasov (Red,Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), which is the first to cross the summit Julierpass GPM (7,3 km with an average slope of 6,5% and maximum of 13,6%): Romo instead he goes first to the sprint of Nufenen, which in turn precedes the San Bernardino Pass #RideforGino (7,5 km with an average slope of 5,9% and maximum of11,9%), which instead still rewards Vlasov. After the intermediate sprint of Lostallo, cut first by Bilbao, we go back up for the first of the two passages on the climb of castaneda (4,4 km with an average slope of 9,8% and maximum of 20,5%): Vlasov, already virtual leader of the climbers' classification, is trying to greet the other escapees, even more so now that the group is closing in under the impulse of theUAE Team Emirates-XRG. Pull Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), but behind him he initially appears detached Joao almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) perhaps due to a poorly executed gear change: the Portuguese recovers, while Romain Gregoire (Groupama-FDJ) is seriously starting to lose contact. The leading group is scattering, while the top of the hill is rewarding in front Vlasov, despite the recovery from the rear of Bilbao e Powless. As for the men in the general classification, the group stands out Almeida, but not only that: with him there are Kevin Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Oscar Onlyy (Team Picnic PostNL), Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step), Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R The World Team), Pablo Castrillo (Movistar Team), Lennard Kamna (Lidl Trek), Ben O'Connor (Team Jayco AlUla) e Matthew Riccitello (Israel-PremierTech). We are back to climbing the hill of castaneda (4,4 km with an average slope of 9,8% and maximum of 21,3%): what remains of the escape ends, but the difficulties also belong to those like O'Connor e Castrol had suffered during the first climb. Take Alaphilippe, taken from Onley: the latter then remains alone in command, followed first by Almeida and then by GallThe Portuguese completes his progression and passes first at the GPM, after which however the road continues to climb for the last 2 km. Almeida e Onley they move forward in mutual agreement, with a view to the stage victory and perhaps even the yellow jersey that has now been lost Gregory, adrift: the British rider sets off, and in the sprint he burns the Portuguese, who for his part continues to recover in the general classification, which from today is led by vauquelin.
