The altimetry of the fourth stage

Lecce, 12 May 2025 – The sprint in Valona has once again rewarded Mads Pedersen, who scored a brace at Giro 2025 taking back the pink jersey that Primoz Roglic had stolen from him in the time trial the day before. The Dane is honoring his participation in the Giro in the best possible way and will also have his chance in the fourth stage. The Lidl rider now leads with 9 seconds on Roglic and 14 on his teammate Vacek and he should have no problem in Lecce to keep the jersey, but to get the hat trick he will have to sweat for it in a fairly predictable and written bunch sprint finish. If in the previous stages he had distanced his sprinter rivals on the climbs, this time he will not have the chance to do so and will have to beat them in a full-group sprint. The Giro, therefore, restarts from Puglia and Italy with the fourth stage.

Timeline

A fairly long stage, 189 kilometers, but flat and with only one short climb to Putignano. The main cities in the area are connected via wide and substantially straight roads, passing through Polignano a Mare, intermediate sprint at kilometer 39, Ostuni, Red Bull kilometer, and San Pancrazio Salentino, second intermediate sprint at kilometer 153. Once in Lecce, the final circuit is entered just after the finish. The route will then cover almost the entire circuit of about 12 km before passing the finish and tackling a complete lap. The final 3 km are flat with only one significant bend about 1200 m from the finish. The finale is on wide roads with the last kilometer in a slight curve to the left until the final straight of 300 m on 8 m wide asphalt.

Favorites

The fourth stage of Giro d'Italia 2025 is the first entirely dedicated to sprinters. There are no significant climbs and the sprinter teams will be able to keep the race under control. As always, an initial breakaway will start, but it will certainly be caught towards the finish line and this time there are no climbs where Pedersen will be able to make a selection: he will have to beat the best sprinters in the group. The pink jersey is obviously a candidate for a hat-trick, but watch out for Kaden Groves, Olaf kooij, Sat Bennett, Wout Van Aert, even if he is not at the top, Corbin Strong and Ourluis Classroom. Among the Italians there are few chances in the sprint, Stefano will try oldani and Philip Fiorelli.
