Giro d'Italia 2025, stage 5: route, altimetry, favorites and TV times
After the sprint in Lecce, we arrive in Matera, with a very rough final that is still to be deciphered. A couple of breaks could prevent the sprint, but Mads Pedersen is a candidate for a hat-trick. Watch out for Van Aert and Pidcock too

The altimetry of the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia 2025
Lecce, May 13, 2025 – The Casper's paw From Uden in the sprint in the arrival of the fourth stage in Lecce. The Dutchman from Picnic outwitted the favourites, especially Olav kooij and Mads Pedersen, second and fourth, and also Kaden Groves, sixth. A somewhat surprising success for Van Uden who is therefore a candidate to be the protagonist of the group sprints. Best Italian Matteo Muskets tenth. In a flat stage there were no upheavals in the general classification. The Giro 2025 will therefore start again with Pedersen in the lead with 7 seconds on Roglic and on Wednesday 14th May there will be a stage that promises to be a show from Ceglie Massapica to Matera, with a finale that is all to be experienced and not at all predictable.
Timeline
The stage is substantially flat until the last 35 km. It is 150 kilometers from Ceglie Massapica to Matera, but with a classic northern finish. The first part remains on the Murge plateau before descending to Taranto and skirting the Metaponto coast along the fast-flowing state road 106. Followed by a short Bernalda climb then a hilly stretch up to fourth category of Montescaglioso. Short descent, slight slope and then climb to the finish in Matera. The road climbs slightly for the last twenty kilometres, but the last three become selective. There is a 10% ramp to enter the city. At the turn of the last kilometer, two left-hand bends (marked bend at 1200 meters) to enter the final straight, 300 meters long, all slightly uphill (asphalt surface, width 8 meters).
Favorites
This stage is not easy to decipher, because the final part, with some steep sections, could give way to some sprinters or cut out some sprinters. On sections like this, with some climbs, Mads Pedersen he is at ease and so is Wout Van Aert can be the protagonist. A possible sprinter in the final is Tom pidcock, who obviously will have to avoid a sprint finish. In case of a general sprint, keep your eyes on Moschetti, Oldani, Vendrame, Kooij, Groves and Van Uden.
