Giro d'Italia 2024: all the stages
Rome, 3 May 2024 - There are 3.400 kilometers in total divided into 21 stages with 44 thousand meters of altitude difference: here is the Giro d'Italia 2024. It starts from Venaria Reale on May 4th (target a Turin) and we arrive on May 26th Roma. Key stages already at the second with the Sanctuary of Oropa, because you climb straight away, while in the last week the stages of Livigno, Monte Pana and Passo Broncon will be decisive. The last obstacle is Monte Grappa in the twentieth. A tough path, although perhaps less challenging than other years. As always, everything will depend on the runners (here there startlist of the Giro 2024), and by the desire to run hard, with Tadej Pogacar number one favorite for the final pink jersey.

Stage 1 - Venaria Reale-Turin 140 kilometres, Saturday 4 May
The 2024 Giro starts from Venaria Reale with an already quite treacherous stage with three GPMs, especially the last one, namely Colle Maddalena, located about 20 kilometers from the finish line. It will be a finale to pay attention to with a long descent and then the climb to San Vito just three minutes from the finish in Turin. Stage 3 Novara-Fossano 166 kilometres, Monday 6 May
First flat stage for the Giro 2024. In the third stage there is the fourth category of Lu at kilometer 58, then a long constant slightly uphill road to arrive in Fossano, but without difficulty for the group which should propose the first arrival in sprint of the Giro.
Stage 4 Acqui Terme-Andora 190 kilometres, Tuesday 7 May
Fraction divided in half. Not an easy first part with the third category of Colle del Melogno with the summit at kilometer 88, then a long descent to get to Savona and finally the last 60 flat kilometres. In the finale, Capo Mele on a route that follows Sanremo.
Stage 5 Genoa-Lucca 178 kilometres, Wednesday 8 May
Fraction to be interpreted. An escape will certainly start using the Bracco Pass at kilometer 62 (third category), then a long flat stretch in the central area towards Tuscany, up to the Montemagno gap 23 kilometers from the finish line. Will it be enough to avoid the sprint? Maybe not.
Stage 6 Torre del Lago (Viareggio)-Rapolano Terme 180 kilometres, Thursday 9 May
Second part of the stage is very treacherous with the dirt road. The first part is flat for over 60 kilometres, then the fourth category of Volterra which creates a long stretch of constant ups and downs between the province of Siena, with passages from Casole d'Elsa and Montarrenti. Subsequently you tackle the dirt sector of Vidritta which, compared to the Strade Bianche, is 2 km longer and connects, less than a few hundred meters of asphalt, to the Bagnaia section. The latter presents gradients of up to 15% and, in Grotti, the second GPM of the day. Tough sections also in Pievina at kilometer 164 and in Serre Rapolano at kilometer 175.
Stage 7 Foligno-Perugia 40 kilometres, Friday 10 May
Race against the clock in Umbria for a flat time trial for 34 kilometres, then climb towards Perugia in the final six kilometres. Several curves and counterslopes before the wide final hairpin bends that lead to the finishing straight. Of note, 6.4 km from the finish, the 1300 m of Casaglia at almost 12% with peaks of 16%. Final straight line of 250 m on paved road 6 m wide.
Stage 8 Spoleto-Prati di Tivo 152 kilometres, Saturday 11 May
Apennine stretch with very little plain and many ups and downs. It goes uphill towards Forca di Cerro, then the second category Gpm of Forca Capistrello, here follows a long stretch of continuous against slope up to the Casale Bottone pass which precedes the third category Gpm of Croce Abbio 40 from the finish line. Subsequently there will be over 25 kilometers of descent to the entrance of Prati di Tivo which measures 14 kilometers at an average gradient of 7% and maximum gradients of 12%.
Stage 9 Avezzano-Naples 214 kilometres, Sunday 12 May
Classic stage in Campania with dangers around the corner. The first part is quite easy and also slightly and steadily downhill to arrive first in the province of Caserta and then in that of Naples. After passing the Tyrrhenian coast you arrive at the Monte di Procida area where the last challenging kilometers take place. The roads are in good condition, but with narrow carriageways and continuous changes in direction and slope. Of note, after reaching Baia in Torregaveta, there is a sudden 14% drop that leads to Lake Lucrino from where you turn towards Pozzuoli and Posillipo from which you descend with the long descent of Via Petrarca to the city center and the last kilometres.
Stage 10 Pompeii-Cusano Mutri 142 kilometres, Tuesday 14 May
Another big climb. After the first 50 flat kilometers you start to climb. First the second category of Camposauro at kilometer 82, then a phase of 40 kilometers of ups and downs to reach the beginning of the final climb which is 29 kilometers long with average gradients of 4.6% and maximum gradients of 14%. In the last five kilometers gradients constantly above 7%.
Stage 11 Foiano-Francavilla al Mare 207 kilometres, Wednesday 15 May
We catch our breath at the 2024 Giro and after an up and down start with the third category Gpm in Piercatella, the road descends to reach Templi where the long plain begins towards Francavilla al Mare where a sprint finish is likely.
Stage 12 Martinsicuro-Fano 193 kilometres, Thursday 16 May
Stage that arrives at the sea but with several obstacles to take into consideration. It is a fraction with small walls to tackle, in sequence Osimo, Monsano, Ostra, La Croce and Mondolfo, while the last is in Monte Giove ten kilometers from the end. Hamlet for sprinters.
Stage 13 Riccione-Cento 179 kilometres, Friday 17 May
Stage entirely in Emilia Romagna between the provinces of Rimini, Forlì Cesena, Ravenna, Bologna and Ferrara. Fraction entirely flat and without Gpm. The arrival in the sprint is a given.
Stage 14 Castiglione delle Stiviere-Desenzano del Garda 31 kilometres, Saturday 18 May
Second time trial of the 2024 Giro, this time for pure specialists and totally flat with passages in Solferino and Torre di San Martino for the two intermediate time recordings. We will have to pedal hard and Pippo Ganna will be among the protagonists.
Stage 15 Malerba del Garda-Livigno 222 kilometres, Sunday 19 May
High mountain cap. We start by climbing Colle San Zeno after 64 kilometres, then the central phase to catch our breath up to the Mortirolo Pass, 12 kilometers at 7% and maximums of 16%, followed by a descent to arrive at Grosio where the road starts to climb again and the end is very tough . First the Foscagno Pass of 14 kilometers at 6.5% and maximums of 12% with the summit at kilometer 213, finally the last 4 kilometers still uphill to reach Livigno at an altitude of 2385 metres.
Stage 16 Livigno-Monte Pana 202 kilometres, Tuesday 21 May
Alpine hamlet with arrival in Val Gardena in Santa Cristina. It starts with the Stelvio Pass at kilometer 53, then a long central phase at the bottom of the valley to arrive in Bolzano, a flying finish line preparatory to a triple climb enclosed in one that includes Sciliar, Siusi allo Sciliar and then Passo Pinei. At the top there is a short descent and then you climb again in the last kilometers up to Monte Pana.
Stage 17 Selva Gardena-Passo Broncon 159 kilometres, Wednesday 22 May
Dolomite plug. Passo Sella, Passo Rolle, Passo Gobbera and Passo del Broncon are climbed twice. The final climb measures 12 kilometers with an average gradient of 6.5% and maximum gradients of 13%. You reach 1610 meters above sea level.
Stage 18 Fiera di Primiero-Padova 178 kilometres, Thursday 23 May
He catches his breath in stage 18 with only the fourth category of Lanon after a few kilometres, then all flat terrain up to Padua where the sprint finish seems obvious. The group can recover energy in view of the final climbs.
Stage 19 Montegliano-Sappada 157 kilometres, Friday 24 May
The climb starts again in the third week of the Giro d'Italia with the high altitude finish in Sappada. Passo Duron, Sella Valcalda and Cima Sappada are climbed, the latter being 8 kilometers long with average gradients of 4.7% and maximum gradients of 15%. About 5 km from the finish line, go slightly downhill along the Sappada cycle path with a slightly narrower track than the road. At 2 km you turn right and the road steepens (10%) until you enter the center where the gradient continues around 5% until the last km where the road descends.
Stage 20 Alpago-Bassano del Grappa 184 kilometres, Saturday 25 May
Last mountain stage before the Rome catwalk. The runners will climb Monte Grappa twice which measures 18 kilometers with an average gradient of 8.1% and maximum gradients of 17%. It won't be uphill, and it will be a factor to take into consideration. The summit of the second climb is in fact located 30 minutes from the finish line. Final dive towards Bassano del Grappa.
Stage 21 Rome-Rome 125 kilometres, Sunday 26 May
Classic catwalk in the capital. Final stage divided into two parts: approach, from the start in Rome-EUR, until the first crossing of the finish line, reaching the coast and then Ostia, then returning to the starting area and then the final circuit (8 laps) inside of the Capital. The 9.5 km circuit develops entirely along the city streets with some stretches on cobblestones. It will be a sprint finish.
