Rome, 12 April 2025 – Spring has arrived and so has the day of the queen of the Northern Classics. The Paris Roubaix 2025 closes the holy week of cycling, seven days of April for great cyclists between the Tour of Flanders and the cobblestones of a Hell of the North between dust or mud, to enter into glory. It is the most spectacular panorama for one-day races, waiting for the great tours, the holy grail of cycling, the hardest race, but also the most desired and coveted. Mathieu Van der Poel has won it in the last two years, but in this stellar 2025 there is the novelty of the debut of Tadej Pogacar, who has set his sights on winning everything, starting from the classics and arriving at the Tour de France and, who knows, even the Vuelta. The race, luck and falls aside, should be a deal for the two of them, even if the Slovenian is at his first experience and this could be a factor. But the lineup of possible protagonists is rich, with also Mads Pedersen and Wout Van Aert ready to amaze, without forgetting Goofy Ganna which perhaps meets the classic most suited to him, that is, as true bicycle rouleurs compared to the too steep slopes of Flanders. Arenberg, Mons en Pevele, Carrefour de l'Arbre are the names of the sectors that make your legs tremble.

But pay attention to the latest news emerging from the highest levels of theAlpecin-Deceuninck, which for its standard-bearer complains of a poor physical condition after the efforts of Flanders, in turn preceded by a seasonal illness: perhaps a pre-tactic to unload the heavy grades of the favourite onto others or a real problem to evaluate, also in consideration of the less than clement weather forecast for tomorrow?

Chapter Jonathan Milan: the first feedback of the year, between Milan-Sanremo (81st place) and other Northern Classics, have apparently failed (at least for now) the Friulian, to date perhaps 'only' a specialist in sprints and time trials. Yet, his weight and power could make things easier for him in a race that does not require too much stylistic grace, which the 2000 class lacks. Up front, in the Lidl-Trek hierarchy, are Mads Pedersen and Jasper Stuyven, but who knows, maybe with the lights off Milan will choose the best stage to confirm himself as 'Ganna's twin'.

The path

The total distance from Compiegne to Roubaix will be 259 kilometres with 30 cobblestone sectors for 55 kilometres (here is the timetable). As usual, the sectors will be marked with the classic stars (one for the easiest ones, five for the most difficult ones). The first will come after 98 kilometers of racing (Troisvilles and Inchy), but the Roubaix will really get going later. After the sectors of Vertain, Verchaing, Querenaing, Artres and Monchaux, we arrive at the first real difficulty. At kilometer 155 there is the Haveluy-Wallers sector of 2.5 kilometers with four stars of difficulty, which is in fact the prelude to the first watershed of the race: the Arenberg Forest. It is 2300 meters of slight uphill and five stars of difficulty. It will not be clear who the winner is, but certainly who will not be. And also pay attention to the entrance, where everyone will want to be in the lead and the chicane is confirmed to slow down the speed compared to the classic straight entrance (chosen to reduce the number of accidents). Outside the Forest the real battle for victory will begin, first with the Helesmes, Hornaing, Brillon sectors and above all Sars and Roses (four stars), then with Beuvry Foret and Orchies, but above all with sector 12 of Auchy lez Orchies in Bersèe which measures 2.7 kilometres with four stars of difficulty. We are therefore approaching the big sectors that often decide the Roubaix. Number 11 is the one that scares everyone, it is called Monsignor en Pevele and measures 3 kilometers at 5 stars of difficulty. It is often one of the key moments not only for its hardness but also because it is not too far from the finish line (minus 45). But it's not over. Easier sections are those of Merignies, Ennevelin, Templeuve, Cysoing and Wannehain, while in the final two other thrilling sectors, circled in red by the protagonists. First Camphin en Pevele of 1.8 kilometers (4 stars), then the legendary Carrefour de l'Arbre (2.100 meters at 5 stars). It is the last really difficult sector 15 from the finish line. The last three are in fact catwalks between Gruson, Willems and the last one dedicated to Charles Crupelandt (twice winner of Roubaix in 1912 and 1914). Canonical finish at the Roubaix velodrome. Who will enter the cycling Olympus?
