Mathieu Van Der Poel at Paris-Roubaix 2025 (Ansa)
Roubaix (France), 13 April 2025 - After the Milan-Sanremo 2025 and Giro delle Fiandre 2025, Also Paris-Roubaix 2025 proposes a head to head between Mathieu van der Poel e Tadej pogacar. The two eternal rivals of this season of Monument, with a series of attacks and counter-attacks they eliminate the other opponents of the day, also hindered by the numerous mechanical problems on the cobblestones: this is the case of Filippo Gana (which will close 13esimo), Wout van aert and especially Mads pedersen, the first to break the ice among the most awaited men. But the inconveniences in theHell of the North they hide in every curve, and it's not just a figure of speech: 38 km from the finish line a willing pogacar slips and breaks his bike too, thus paving the way for the winning gallop of Van der Poel, who as a setback has to deal with the throwing of a water bottle by a 'fan' which fortunately does not cause any damage. The Dutchman also draws an unexpected card and it is a mechanical problem in the Carrefour de l'Arbre which however does not create excessive problems: the runner of theAlpecin-Deceuninck enjoys the deserved parade in the velodrome, landing the hat-trick in a row as Octave Lapize e Francesco Moser. pogacar, in turn, takes a good second place on his debut in this race, curiously the first in a Monument, while completing the podium is Pedersen.
Race report
As usual, the first part of the 259,2 km scheduled from Compiègne a Roubaix It is dedicated to the hunt for a good escape, with several shots and counter shots. In the end they go away 8 men: It is Kim Heiduk (Ineos Grenadiers), Oier Lazkano (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Markus Hoelgaard (Uno-X Mobility), Jonas slip (Intermarché-Wanty), Max Walker (EF Education-EasyPost), Jasper De Buyst (Lotto Cycling Team), Rory Townsend (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) and Abram Stockman (Unibet Tietema Rockets). Meanwhile one of the first falls involves two Italians: Michele Gazzoli (XDS Astana Team) and Manlio Moro (Movistar Team), with the second rider retiring due to a suspected broken collarbone, but also giving up Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility). The first paved sector, that of Troisvilles to Inchy (2,2 km), causes immediate damage: Jasper stuyven (Lidl-Trek) e Jasper Phillipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) fall, while Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) punctures and loses over 1'. Also Wout van aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), involved in a previous fall, appears to be in difficulty. The group of Ganna e Philipsen manages to conclude the long chase, also taking advantage of the non-infernal pace imposed by theAlpecin-Deceuninck to allow the return of their second striker. Then he also goes out David Ballerini (XDS Astana Team), while Alec Segaert (Lotto Cycling Team) falls. On the sector Haveluy at Wallers (2,5 km) accelerate first Mads pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and then Tadej pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), with Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who does not want to be outdone. As usual the race explodes in the Arenberg Forest (2,3 km), in which hole jonathan milan (Lidl-Trek): with the favourites there is a surprise instead Stephen Bissegger (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team). Nothing to do instead for Ganna e Van Aert, who lose contact. pogacar e Van der Poel they challenge each other with shots and counter shots and to give support to the Dutchman there is Philipsen. In the sector Tilloy in Sars-et-Rosières (2,4 km) Pedersen is cut off by a puncture, while pogacar accelerate: Van der Poel e Philipsen they close, while Bissegger progressively loses contact. The situation crystallizes for a while: in front there is a luxury trio that collaborates in harmony and can count on more than 1'20" on the first pursuers, among which are Pedersen and Van Aert. In the Mons-en-Pévèle sector (3 km) Pogacar tries to accelerate the pace, but Van der Poel e Philipsen resist behind him. Indeed, in the last 500 meters the Dutchman tries to push forward, and this time it's the Slovenian who closes, with the Belgian appearing to be the most tired. pogacar he raises and takes the only one with him Van der Poel: the Slovenian tries again on the sector of From Pont-Thibault to Ennevelin (1,4 km), at the end of which he takes a wrong turn, falls and damages his bike. So, 38 km from the finish line Van der Poel, victim of a water bottle thrown in his face by a "fan", remains alone in command and starts a sort of stopwatch to maintain the margin of 20" on the most accredited rival. After an initial recovery phase, pogacar he also loses again due to the greater caution with which he now approaches the curves, instead the preferred terrain of Van der Poel, who puts his years in cyclocross to good use. As if that were not enough, 20 km from the finish line pogacar he changes his bike again and does it very calmly: a bit of an emblem, perhaps, of the surrender of the world champion. In reality, even for Van der Poel there is a twist on the horizon in Carrefour de l'Arbre (2,1 km): a mechanical failure forces him to change bikes, but everything is reabsorbed without too many problems. The Dutchman enjoys the deserved parade in the velodrome, with pogacar to follow him further 1'15 ": instead, he climbs onto the third step of the podium Pedersen.
