Rome, 21 May 2025 - And to think that it all started as an April Fool's joke to be dropped via social media last year: instead, in the course of the 21esima and last stop of the Tour de France 2025 the tear was actually inserted Montmartre, to be done three times, attracting opposing opinions from enthusiasts, professionals and above all runners.
The route of the last stage of the Tour de France 2025
The first to hurl himself against a novelty that will transform the final faction of the Great Boucle from a simple catwalk to a real race it was Remco Evenepoel when, at the beginning of spring, what was at the time just a rumour began to take hold. Today, when the veil has actually been lifted on the stage that will close the Tour de France 2025, even big names such as jonas vingegaard, Wout van aert, Jasper Phillipsen e jonathan milan, all disagreeing with what will be a sort of revolution. In reality, Aso had already announced in recent days the inclusion of Montmartre, the novelty that does not however cancel the usual arrival on the Champs Elysee skipped last year, when due to the near coincidence with the Olympics il Tour de France it closed to Nice. The route of the last stage of the next Great Boucle it is linked directly to the test of the Toys, which had rewarded evenepoel, today instead among the most unhappy: the Butte de Montmartre (1,1 km with an average slope of 5,9%) will be climbed three times and the last one just 6 km from the finish line. In the 132,3 km total, there will be no shortage of other small but significant altimetric difficulties: to be precise, the Bazemont Coast (1,7 km with an average slope of 7%), placed 10 km after the start from Mantes-La-Ville, and the Cote du Pavé des Gardes (700 meters with an average slope of 9,7%), which will precede the entrance to Paris. Then the final long circuit 6,8 km, the one already defined as discord.
What cyclists say
For vingegaard the problem is the narrow and winding road of Montmartre, while for evenepoel these are extra efforts that could have been avoided after three very hard weeks already on the legs. The microphones of The Team they have collected the displeasure of Milan, a sprinter by profession. "I Champs Elysees, as a sprinter, I'm something everyone dreams of. It's a shame to see the course changed just before my first Tour de France. In any case, before getting to Paris there will be many opportunities and that's what I want to focus on because the addition of Montmartre will make the racing dynamics different". Instead, to the microphones of Spouse, Van Aert he joins the theory of additional dangers. "I am not happy with this change. I think it is a dangerous choice." More moderate is the dissent of Philipsen, always intercepted by The Team. "As a sprinter it's a shame to see this stage change. However, I believe that Aso have valid reasons. And then it's not a given that a sprinter won't win".
