Cycling, Trentin and Jakobsen on safety: "Yes to limiting ratios, but..."

The two runners express doubts about the solution thought up by Van Aert: "Dialogue with the institutions and changes to the most dangerous sections of the routes and the final stages are also needed"

Rome, 9 January 2025 – The debate has opened Wout van aert and always fueled by the press, Chris Froome: the theme is cycling and its perhaps too high speed which in recent years has caused a surge in accidents, and to give their opinion there have also been Matteo Trentin e Fabio Jacobsen.

Trentin and Jakobsen's statements

To the microphones of CyclingNews, the Italian expressed his opinion on the issue by trying to analyze every aspect. "Limiting the ratios can be a solution, but only together with other changes, with the aim of no longer taking falls for granted and trying to improve, as other sports have done. Cycling has changed and, with them, the speeds have changed, but this is not the main problem. The general level of intensity and combativeness has also increased and in some moments of the races there are too many riders in play". Hence also the need for dialogue, as happened last year before the Paris-Roubaix, with the introduction of the (controversial) chicane before the Arenberg Forest. "If we have always used the same approach to important races, perhaps it is no longer sufficient and we need to do something more to improve safety and what was done last year in France It was a demonstration". It ends with a rather colourful appeal toUCI. "We riders work hard (he uses another expression, ed.) all year round and the least they can do is to meet us halfway like any good governing body: especially if the complaint about safety comes from everyone". On the subject, speaking to the microphones of Road Code, is also expressed Jacobsen, one who, despite himself, still bears the signs on his skin of a terrible fall, the one at Tour of Poland 2020 (and many others). "Limiting the ratios could be an idea, but this solution can be circumvented despite some testing. I think it is more important to pay attention to the race finishes and the types of routes. Also, stricter rules should be put in place for sprint finishes."

Martinez's statements

from Groupama-FDJ to the Bahrain Victorious to try to confirm the expectations that the whole France has on his account: lenny martinez, intercepted by the microphones of Eurosport, is about to experience the season that could definitively consecrate him in today's cycling. "The 2024 It was a fantastic year, even if I ended up a bit down. But I didn't expect to start so strong and in 2025 I want to improve and grow in the one-week stage races: then, later on, we'll think about the Grand Tours". Martinez also talks about his change of team. "I wanted a new experience, abroad and I found this opportunity with many strong riders, together with whom we will try to make the whole team grow". The future dream, needless to say, is the Tour de France. "If one day I could get on the podium it would be great, but we have to think about one step. Last year's experience was good, but unfortunately I didn't get there in good physical condition. It was still a constructive race for me."
