Marcialla, 9 May 2025 – It is a weekend with great cycling in Tuscany, which offers tomorrow Saturday the Giacomo Matteotti Trophy in Marcialla, a town halfway between Florence and Siena, a national competition for elites and under 23s, and on Sunday the international Gran Premio Industrie del Marmo for Under 23s only in Marina di Carrara.
The 71st edition of the Matteotti Trophy was born in 1952 with the success of Gastone Nencini, is organized by the Polisportiva AICS of Florence, with Gianni Cantini as contact person, while Armando Nesi is the general coordinator of the Marcialla sports committee.
This year the event has two new features, it will be held on Saturday and it will do so on a different route that is unanimously considered more challenging, 158 km long with departure at 13,30 pm from Brandi Square also the arrival site. After the first 10 km, the race will cover a 30 km circuit three times with the climb of San Donnino and passages from Marcialla, then a stretch of 57 km with the climb of the “Cipressini” from Poggibonsi to Barberino Val d'Elsa, and the final in the opposite direction to the usual route.
So come on San Casciano Val di Pesa the runners will reach Bivio Canaglia, the descent to Sambuca, Pontenuovo from where the climb towards Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Marcialla will begin with the last surge less than 400 metres from the expected arrival shortly before 17,30 pm. As has been the case for years, the prize is Valpesana Olive Oil Trophy, in addition to the contribution of other companies that have supported this race for years, which boasts an illustrious roll of honour and has been competed by many athletes who have also risen to the professional world.
In 2024 the Matteotti Trophy was won by the Ligurian Nicolò Garibbo with a crescendo finale. The registered players have almost reached the maximum expected ceiling which is 200 with three foreign teams, and almost all the strongest national teams, for a confrontation of absolute prestige, which renews charm and spectacle.
