The Giro d'Italia returns to Tuscany in the 2025 edition. There are three stages that involve the region

Florence, May 7, 2025 – The Line of Business of Italy n.108 that will start on Friday from Durazzo in Albania will find everything in Tuscany when it arrives in Siena from Umbria and Gubbio, the “City of Stone and the Festival of Candles”. It will find dirt roads, therefore it will observe Monday as a rest day, then it will offer the time trial stage from Lucca and Pisa, finally it will present the “killer climb” of San Pellegrino in Alpe at the moment in which this great sporting celebration that is the pink race, will leave Tuscany to go to Emilia.

The Gubbio-Siena
The Gubbio-Siena

Sunday 18th May, Gubbio-Siena stage

There will be 181 kilometers scheduled starting from Gubbio at 13:2.500 and a difference in altitude of 30 meters. There are about XNUMX kilometers of dirt roads characterized by stones, dust and charm. A spectacular stage on roads that for years have hosted the great cycling in March with the road race "roads White”. The arrival in the City of the Palio will invariably be in Piazza del Campo after the deadly wall of via Santa Caterina a few hundred meters from the finish line. There are no particularly challenging climbs planned even if there are three mountain grand prix, but traveling on dirt roads will be tough and the reference is to Colle Pinzuto and Fontebranda.

The Lucca-Pisa
The Lucca-Pisa

Tuesday 20 May, Lucca-Pisa stage (time trial)

A particularly anticipated fraction with the involvement of two splendid cities, that of Lucca with the thought running to the “Urban Walls” and where the Giro also arrived last year, and that of Pisa with the Piazza dei Miracoli and the Leaning Tower that will host the arrival of the stage. It will be 28 km and 600 meters long, with a difference in altitude of 150 meters and the departure of the first competitor at 13,25. The starting platform in Piazza Napoleone (from here 12 years ago the world championship that reached Florence started) to reach, passing through the tunnel of San Giuliano Terme and Asciano Pisano, the Lungarni of Pisa and from here the finish line in the splendid setting of Piazza dei Miracoli. Another arrival after the one in Siena of extraordinary beauty and appeal, certainly a great opportunity to promote both cities. Among other things, the last arrival of the pink race in the city of the Leaning Tower dates back to 1980 and it was also on that occasion, 45 years ago, an individual time trial starting from Pontedera, and the victory was achieved by the Danish Jorgen Marcussen.

Viareggio-Castelnovo ne' Monti
Viareggio-Castelnovo ne' Monti

Wednesday 21st May, Viareggio-Castelnovo ne' Monti

The Giro d'Italia will leave Tuscany on this day with the start from Viareggio at 12,05 for a stage that will end in Castelnuovo in the mountains in the province of Reggio Emilia, 185 km long with a 3.850 meter difference in altitude. The caravan will touch Lucca again after passing through Montemagno, then the roads of Garfagnana to tackle the “killer” climb of Pellegrino in Alpe, the highest town in the entire Apennines located almost at the end of a really tough climb. It is 14 kilometers to reach over 1.600 meters with an average gradient of 8,7 and peaks of 18%. It was here in 2000 (the last passage of the Giro) that the Florentine Francesco Casagrande was the great protagonist of the stage that ended with his success at Abetone, where he also wore the pink jersey. He managed to hold the lead for eleven days until the time trial in Sestriere, when he was ousted by Stefano Garzelli. He concluded the Giro in second place overall and won the green jersey of the climbers. From the climb of San Pellegrino in Alpe to the finish line there will still be around 90 km of a certainly nervous route.

Two Tuscans in the race

The Italians who will be present at the Giro are 48, compared to the 43 of the last edition. Instead, they are only two Tuscan runners at the start. With the XDS Astana Team formation, the Livorno native Diego Ulissi who will be at his twelfth appearance at the Giro d'Italia, where he has often been a protagonist, so much so that he boasts eight stage victories. Another appearance at the Giro d'Italia is that of Filippo The fog athlete from Fibbiana di Montelupo Fiorentino who wears the VF Group Bardiani CSF Faizanè jersey. Magli is an excellent sprinter and will be at his second Giro d'Italia, having competed in the one two years ago.
