Diogo Moreira takes Moto2 pole at Mugello GP
Mugello 21 June 2025 - Plot twists, track evolution and scorching heat. These are some of the situations that characterised the qualifying sessions of Moto2 e Moto3 over the Mugello weekend. A long track, where high temperatures force you to take on important tyre management just to find the fastest lap and the show is guaranteed even in the fights for pole positions in the lower categories of the MotoGP. In Moto2 the check Diogo Moreira su Arenas, both with a super result at their first attempt on the track, while Drive e Arbolino will start sixth and tenth. In Moto3 he makes a masterpiece Alvaro Carpe, his last lap was wonderful, with even an overtaking on Piqueras to finish the pole position lap ahead of the championship leader Wheel; on the other hand, the Italians did badly, all outside the top ten positions.
Moto2: Moreira beats Arenas and takes pole position, Vietti 6th and Arbolino 10th
In Moto2, Q1 opens with everyone waiting at Bucine to try to get a slipstream. The result is more like a race-style rolling start than a race against the clock for pole. Deniz Oncu he immediately proved to be among the best of the session, taking the lead, closely followed by Roberts, Alonso e Ortolá. Contact instead between Van de Goorbergh e Atiratphuvapat, which unfortunately kicks both of them out of the session.
Challenge relaunched between Öncü e Roberts in the second attempt, which send a clear signal to their rivals in Q2. The Turk stops the clock at 1:50.099, while the American sets the track record at 1:49.847, putting himself ahead of everyone. Behind them, it's a final-lap battle for the remaining two positions that qualify for the second session. They win Alonso e Sasaki, while Ortolá, Orchards e Binder they stay out.
The start of Q2 was less confusing, small groups were created to try to attack the best time. The first super time was signed by Albert Arenas with 1:49.857, but he does even better Moreira, who puts himself in front of everyone with a 1:49.745. Behind them Canet, White, Lopez e Guevara. The two Italians Arbolino e Drive they get stuck in the middle of the group, tenth and thirteenth respectively after the first attempt. Very good Deniz Öncü on his first and only attempt, having used the other new tyre in Q1, with a 1:49.975, which earned him a top position.
The second session of Moto2 offers few surprises. The very high temperatures of the asphalt put the tires in serious crisis and there are few who improve on their second attempt compared to the first. Good Gonzalez, who placed fourth on his last lap, while Drive in the penultimate he signs a beautiful sixth place, making a huge leap in the grid. Arbolino also makes a leap forward, taking tenth. The substance of the qualifications, however, does not change. Moreira with his monster lap he takes home the pole position ahead of Arenas e Ramirez.
Moto3: Carpe beats Rueda at last attempt, all Italians out of top 10
In the first qualifying session of the Moto3, as always there is confusion, spectacle and twists. Three Italian drivers involved in this session, namely Dennis Foggia, Stefano Nepa e Guido Pini. You need confidence to do a good lap and several drivers take advantage of a lap out with used tyres to understand the track conditions, before attempting a fast lap. The first reference is offered by Nepa, Followed by Moodley, Buchanan e uriarte, but their laps are literally pulverized, in terms of time, by the first attempts of their rivals.
When the bikes come in to make the time attack in the last six-seven minutes, thus preserving the chance of two-three real timed laps on the track, the stopwatch is lowered by almost a second. Maximo Quiles first he sets the fastest lap, stopping the clock at 1:56.078, then he falls on the second attempt, without however compromising his passage to Q2. His time in fact remains unbeaten. Muñoz from the second half and gains passage to the next round as they do Perez and Italian Dennis Foggia. Guido Pini he is instead very unlucky and is left empty-handed. Fast in all sessions, with a great race pace, he sees his potentially first-place lap cancelled for having touched the green at the exits of the arrabbiate. In the second attempt he finds himself hindered by uriarte and only sets the time at the last attempt, finishing seventh, behind the other Italian in Q1, namely Nepa.
They thus pass to Q2 Quiles, Muñoz, Perez e Foggia, who join the 14 fastest riders of the free practice sessions. In the first real attack on the fastest lap the world championship leader Wheel, tries to immediately give a big blow to the rivals, also acting as a tow for all the riders of the Ajo team. This does not allow Wheel to take the temporary pole position, while he succeeds Carp. Behind them there is a fight, but it is interesting to note that six drivers do not take to the track for the first attempt.
After being defeated in the first attempt, Wheel he tries again, this time it is Carp to pull his teammate along and Wheel thanks by putting himself in front of everyone, followed closely by Ogden second. Piqueras he attacks and gets third, but the real masterpiece, which is worth the first place on the grid, is signed by him Alvaro Carpe. On his last attempt the Murcia-born pilot gets rid of Piqueras with an overtaking on the outside at Arrogante, without losing a hundredth of a second. The Spaniard's monstrous driving in the first part of the track, which earned him the pole position in the Italian Grand Prix with a wonderful 1:54.733. The Italians fought but were unable to find a rhythm and all finished outside the top ten with Carraro twelfth, Foggia fifteenth e Rossi eighteenth.
