Saalbach, 3 February 2025 – The Italian Alpine Skiing team is there and arrives at the World Championships Saalbach with great expectations. If on one hand the women's national team is an absolute confirmation, on the other hand the dream team is in top form with Brignone, Goggia and Bassino, in the men's field there is a timid recovery in the technical races, they have returned to the podium De Aliprandini e Vinatzer, while at speed Casse e Paris can still have their say. The only thing missing is the women's slalom where the difficulty is evident and the podium is unattainable. There is something for everyone and always with Italy as the protagonist, called to face the best of the best in world skiing, starting from Odermatt e Kristoffersen, passing from Ljutic a Good Behrami, ending with Vonn e Shiffrin, who returns to the race to seek yet another laurel. Let's look in detail at the favorites and the Azzurri in the race, race by race.

Super ge women's downhill

The World Championships start with the speed disciplines. The first will be the women's super G where Italy is the super favorite thanks to a fearsome quintet with bassino, reigning champion, Brignone, leader of the general, goggia, needs no introduction, Curtoni, close to the specialty cup two years ago, and Pirovano. The opponents are however many and highly rated, starting with Lara Good Behrami, passing by Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, Lauren Maguey and Cornelia Huetter, but also watch out for Esther Ledecka, the usual loose cannon in these demonstrations. On the decline, however, it is always Italy with Brignone which is red bib on Goggia and Huetter, with Gut Behrami and Lie chasing. All possible great protagonists to which we must add Ledecka, Johnson and especially Lindsey Vonn, who will do the dress rehearsal for Cortina but also has important ambitions for the world championships.

Women's Giant Slalom and Slalom

Italy also on the shields in giant slalom, where Brignone e bassino These are winning cards but the competition is increasing. The specialty leader is Alice Robinson with Sara Hector separated by four points and both have one goal: the world gold. In this case the loose cannon is Mikaela Shiffrin, who will only dedicate himself to giant slalom and slalom, even if his physical condition is still to be calibrated given the long break and the tenth place in slalom in Courchevel. For Italy there will also be goggia to complete a very respectable trio. Outsider diskColturi, Ljutic, Stjernesund, Rast and Gut Behrami. Slalom is the worst discipline for us with few chances of podium for Peterlini, Rossetti, Della Mea and Collomb, also due to a stellar level with Rast, Ljutic, Holdener and Liensberger main favorites, but with Shiffrin ready to take back the scepter.

Super ge men's downhill

The hopes for speed are obviously entrusted to Mattia Casse and Dominik Paris, but in super giant you have to keep an eye on it too Franzoni, already capable of a fourth place this season, in a discipline that has only one clear favourite: Marco Odermatt. In the specialty rankings there is a gap behind the Swiss and there is also the risk of a double or triple with the cards Rogentin, Von Allmen and Monney. A possible outsider is Canadian Cameron AlexanderIn Austria the paper is Kriechmayr, but the conditions will have to be calibrated after the injury in Wengen. In the downhill the Swiss are always the favourites, but Italy can also play the card Schieder, skilled and technical on a track that could adapt well, but compared to the super G there is greater balance with the fearsome Slovenian Hrobat, together with the Canadians Alexander and Crawford and the Americans Cochran Siegle and Bennett. French without Sarrazin and with mechanical Happy as main card.

Men's Giant Slalom and Slalom

Finally, the men's technical tests. Good signs from Italy in the classics. Vinatzer he made the podium in slalom in Kitzbuhel and De Aliprandini in giant slalom in Adelboden: these are two important arrows in our bow. Among the wide poles, however, there is a phenomenon and that is Marco Odermatt, hard to beat, but with Steen Olsen, Kristoffersen, Kranjec and Meillard you can play for the podium. Together with De Aliprandini, medalist in 2021, there will also be Vinatzer and Of The Vine, both ready to surprise, while the fourth card is to be chosen between Franzoni and Kastlunger. In slalom it is even tougher. Kristoffersen he's the favorite, but Noel, Meillard and Haugan they are dangerous, as is Pinheiro Braathen e Mcgrath, without forgetting German Strasser. Almost all of the first group of merit can win given the great balance, including the Austrians Feller, Schwarz e Gstrein. Italy has Vinatzer as its main card, podium in Kitz and bronze two years ago, then the eternal Stefano Gross with Kastlunger sure of the place while the fourth slot should go to Della Vite.
