Monza – It could be considered the “miniature” version of the Rome internationals. On the red clay of the club Royal Villa Tennis. With the tournament ATP Challenger Atkinsons Monza Open 25 enters the circuit of great tennis. In the direction, a man of experience like George Tarantola, a true Monza native, international referee for 25 years, already at the helm of numerous Challengers in Italy and abroad.
It is a category 100 ATP (like the points up for grabs for the winner) with a prize pool of 143 thousand euros. It starts on Sunday, with the qualifications, then gradually up to the finals. A week of great tennis that will see The day media partner of the event.
At Villa Reale Tennis, four Top 100 players and other young champions will compete for a luxury entry list. There will be the 18-year-old from Palermo Federico China, born in 2007 and number 371 in the world ranking, protagonist at the last Masters 1000 in Miami where, on his debut in the major circuit, he immediately managed to obtain his first success by beating the Argentine with two tie-breaks in the first round Comesana, the Roman left-handed Jacopo Vasami, contemporary of Cinà, number 8 in the world junior ranking thanks to the titles won in February in Egypt and Morocco. A wild card for the main draw also in Peter Fellin, 23-year-old local player: he trains with the V-Team on the Villa Reale Tennis courts and about twenty days ago he won his first international title, in an Itf in Huamantla (Mexico). And again, the number 90 in the world Marton Fucsovics, Raphael Collignon (91), Thiago Seyboth Wild (96), Nishesh Basavareddy (100), as well as Juan Manuel Cerundolo (126), the “Frenchman from Bergamo“ Luca Van Assche (174), Daniel Evans (183) and Matteo Gigante (185).
The 24 tennis players will find an event that is taken care of down to the smallest details and is an absolute rarity for the circuit. Challenger, the electronic call system: there will be no line judges at the sides of the three courts and all calls will be computerized, as happens in the biggest tournaments in the world (in Italy only at the Rome International and the Nitto ATP Finals). “We have raised the bar – Tarantola’s satisfaction – despite having only had three months, from the green light from the ATP, to organize the tournament. It was a race against time to best accommodate the athletes, the referees, all the staff and the public. Because the goal is to make the Challenger a fixed stop on the ATP circuit. And, if possible, make it grow. Even if we have already started with a high-end tournament”.
