Australian Open 2025, Bolelli-Vavassori dream: it's the doubles semifinal
The Italian pair, who are chasing the title in Melbourne after losing in the final in 2024, overcame Portuguese duo Borges and Cabral in two sets
Melbourne, January 21, 2025 – Simone Bolelli and Andrea vavassors, the third seeds in the draw, defeated the Portuguese Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral 3-6, 4-7 (6) and reached the Australian Open men's doubles semifinal. They will face the Swede Andre Goransson and the Dutchman Sem Verbeek, who surprised the Salvadoran Marcelo Arevalo and the Croatian Mate Pavic, ATP number 6s in doubles and ITF world champions for 4, 4-6, 6-3, 1-2024.

The Italian pair, finalists last year, eliminated the Germans Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens in the first round in the previous rounds, then beat the Italian Luciano Darderi with the Colombian Diego Hidalgo and the Spanish Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar. So far Bolelli and Vavassori they haven't lost a set yet and won all four tie breaks played at Melbourne Park.
Bolelli, who after 10 years has improved his best ranking in doubles and has risen to the position number 6 thanks to the success in Adelaide with Vavassori, he played at least the quarter-finals at the Australian Open for the sixth time, where triumphed in 2015 in tandem with Fabio Fognini. They then became the first all-Italian pair to win a men's doubles Slam since Nicola Pietrangeli and Orlando Sirola triumphed at Roland Garros. Thanks to today's success, he will play his fourth Australian Open men's doubles semifinal.
Vavassori, number 7 in the doubles ranking, is preparing for her third Slam doubles semifinal, all with Bolelli, after the finals in Melbourne and at Roland Garros in 2024.
