Matteo Berrettini beats Alex Zverev in the second round of the Monte Carlo tournament

Rome, 8 April 2025 - Mission accomplished for Matthew Berrettini: the roman tennis player beat Alex Zverev in the second round of the Monte Carlo tournament, thus ensuring his friend Jannik Sinner the number one throne until the return.

For the 28 year old Italian, No.33 in the world ranking a great comeback on the German, the world number 2 and top seed of the tournament, who had won the first set with a clear 6 am - 2 pm only to give in under the blows of Berretti 6-3 and 7-5, in about two and a half hours of gameplay.

In the round of 1000 of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, the first clay-court Masters XNUMX of the season held at the Country Club in the Principality of Monaco, Berrettini could find Lorenzo Musetti (13) who will face Czech Jiri Lehecka tomorrow.

Berrettini: “A crazy race”

"It was a crazy race, especially on a mental level. Today I didn't feel great, things weren't going well also due to Zverev's merits, then I changed my attitude, they were fundamental the first games of the second set, I kept fighting and I'm very proud of how it went" was Matteo's immediate comment after the match. "I grew up on earth, until I was 19 I played mostly on this surface and unfortunately we don't play there as much as I would like. For three years I had to skip the best tournaments on clay, I'm very happy to have won this match", added Berrettini.

He then later added: "I'm sure Jannik will return to the same level as before. For anything, he knows he can count on me: I think he is managing this situation in the best possible way and I am happy to have given him this assist. We last spoke a few weeks ago, there has always been great mutual respect between us: at this moment, however, it is right to give him his space", reported by Supertennis.
