Sinner three times Slam, Jannik king at Australian Open: Zverev dominated

Melbourne, January 26, 2024 – Who would have ever thought we would find ourselves here... Actually, no, the sentence has an expiration date that marks 2024. Because deep down we all knew that in this 2025 Jannik Sinner he would have shown up ready for the Slam appointment. And here it is, the third Major of his career, the second consecutive at the Australian Open, after beating the world number 6 3-7, 6-4 (6), 3-2 Alexander Zverev in a final that seemed like a solo. Domination, determination, destiny: this is how the 23-year-old from Sesto Pusteria became the most successful Italian tennis player ever, even surpassing Nicholas Pietrangeli with 2 major titles.

For both players the Slam final it was not an unexplored continent, Jannik found you twice in 2024 consecration, Sascha Instead, he stopped on just as many occasions just one step away from cup, just like today. The blue and the German both worked on the post-sales service, adjusting and lowering the ball launch to find more speed. And to say that the 27-year-old from Hamburg in 2024 has already held his own serve the84 percent of the time while the percentages of the South Tyrolean break through the 90 wall. The work in the off season paid off much more in the case of Jannik, who closed the match with zero break points conceded.

The assumptions are therefore those of a match dictated by the service, and so it is from the first games. There is little exchange right away, but you immediately notice that Sinner has his feet closer to the line than his opponent. number 1 in the world he suffered two chances to break Zverev's serve, thanks to a drop in the German's serve, who however revived by placing three winning firsts. Small difficulties also for Jannik when he is serving: exchanges that get longer and a couple of 40 all, with Sascha however missing the jabThe first one acts as a lifebelt for Zverev even when the Italian earns other three break points. The fourth chance (in the game) is however in blue colours, the passing shot down the line on a timid attack by Sascha allows Jannik to take the lead in the match, which a couple of minutes later was able to close the first set, which lasted three quarters of an hour, 6-3.

Le net sorties can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Even in the second set it is a skirmish set from the baseline, with the German having more hurry to close the exchanges and often makes mistakes. As happens in the third game, where however a double fault and a missed volley give Sinner two break points, then cancelled with as many Smash. While Jannik shows off some short ball from the repertoire, the match continues under the service rule until 5 all. The Italian has collected 100 percent of the points with the first serve up to this point, Zverev 84. Once the measures of the services have been taken, the exchanges lengthen and the match takes the path of the tie break, also this very balanced. The breaking point? A ribbon hit by Sinner with a fanned forehand that turns into a winning drop shot. An ace and a first serve impossible to send back project the Italian to 2 sets to love.

Jannik inserts the automatic pilot and continues to command the exchanges. Zverev sets up a resistance, but in the sixth game, thanks to a couple of forehand errors, he concedes two break points. He cancels the first, but the pressure from the Italian is too strong, especially on the second serve that is attacked and converted into the 4-2 point. Zverev is discouraged, but does not give up and holds his service game. On the other side, however, Sinner has the target well in his sights and five minutes later he is once again the champion of the Australian Open.

Disappointed Zverev who hoped "to be more competitive. But you're too strong – he admits -, no one deserves it more than you”. And he leaves with a promise: “I don’t know if I’ll be able to lift the trophy, but I’ll try again.”

“A complicated day again for your team and your family,” Sinner says, addressing Zverev. “They are wonderful and you are an extraordinary player. We all know how strong you are as a player and a person. A Slam cup will soon arrive for you.”

He then talks about his team: “We worked so hard to come back here, it's a wonderful feeling to share this joy with you – anda Cahill -, I will try to convince you to stay with me. It all started when I made the change and chose you two, I am very happy that you are with me”.

“The important part is the fans – concludes Jannik -, I felt your love since the week before the tournament. See you next year”.
