The Italian was forced to abandon the Australian Open at the end of a match that lasted almost 4 hours. In the end, the American won in 4 sets

Lorenzo Sonego exits in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, defeated by Ben Shelton in four sets
Melbourne, 22 January 2025 – The splendid volley made by sonego in the second set against Shelton, with the ball bouncing into the American's court and then returning to the Italian's half, will remain one of the most beautiful shots of the tournament but it wasn't enough for Sonego to beat the American in the quarter-finals of theAustralian Open.
In fact, Lorenzo Sonego's dream of a first semifinal at the Australian Open tennis tournament has faded. The Italian, number 55 ATP, lost in the quarterfinals to the American Ben Shelton, number 20 in the ranking and 21 in the seeding, in four sets with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6. Now Shelton awaits the winner of the other quarter-final that will be played today in Melbourne between the world number one Jannik Sinner, reigning champion, and the Australian Alex De Minaur, world number one and seeded at the Australian Open.
A shame for the Italian who for many parts of the match seemed capable of winning the game despite the defeat in the first and second set. Sonego was betrayed by some inaccuracies in key moments of the match and the solidity at Shelton's service. It remains an excellent tournament played by the Italian who nevertheless achieved the best result of his career in a slam (previously he had reached the eighth-finals twice at Roland Garros and once at Wimbledon).
