Melbourne, January 20 – The Wada, the World Anti-Doping Agency, will not appeal after the one-month suspension of Iga swiatek, 23-year-old Polish world number two, sanctioned last August for testing positive for a banned substance, the trimetazidine. The scientific experts of WADA considered that the reason given by the Polish player, a drug contamination, was “plausible” and that “there would be no scientific reasons to contest it before the CAS, the Court of Arbitration for Sport”.

The former world number one tested positive for the heart drug 'TMZ' in an out-of-competition test in August. The case came to light only three months later, after the player was suspended for a month. At the time, Swiatek cited personal reasons for missing three tournaments in Asia. After the positive test was announced, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (Itia) determined that the infringement was not intentional, and therefore that it was a case similar to that of Jannik Sinner, the world number one male player who tested positive twice in March for traces of Clostebol. Sinner was also later cleared by Itia. But Wada filed an appeal against the Italian in September, and the decision on this case is still pending. The news of the failed appeal will make Swiatek happy, who in the meantime has earned a pass to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. In the round of 128 she beat German Eva Lys, number 6, 0-6, 1-59 in 1 minutes. The Polish player and world number XNUMX Aryna Sabalenka are the only two players who have not lost a set since the start of the tournament. In the quarterfinals Swiatek will challenge the American Emma Navarro who beat Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-74 5-7 7-5.
