Vinatzer, the Italian slalom has awakened. In Garmisch only Brignone smiles
The South Tyrolean, 2nd in Kitzbuehel, scores a podium that had been missing in the specialty for three years. Fede third in the super-G
Vinatzer plays the magic trick, because it's a morning of alternating rain that makes the already very icy and tormented surface of the Ganslern track more slippery. An irresistible second run allowed the twenty-five year old from Val Gardena to climb from eleventh place at half-way up to second. The victory, however, goes to Noel (1'41″49), with Brazilian Lucas Pinheiro Braathen in third. "I'm very happy because getting on the podium in Kitzbuehel has always been my dream, since I was a child. For me - Alex said - it wasn't an easy period. But I managed to get back up and I did it right here". The South Tyrolean thus breaks a three-year fast (the last podium was by Giuliano Razzoli) and with a team without a head coach after the sudden resignation of Simone Del Dio a few days ago. The next men's stage will be in nearby Styria, in Schladming, for two night races: tomorrow the giant slalom and on Wednesday the special.
Brignone instead extends her long streak of podiums (it is the 77th of her career). But in the general rankings, Gut-Behrami, winner of the super-G yesterday, closes the gap on her, with second place going to the Norwegian Kajsa Lie. Federica defines her January as "incredible" and is aiming for the most important event of the season, the World Championships in Saalbach. "I want to disconnect for a few days with my friends in contact with nature - she says -. I like this and it recharges me before arriving in Saalbach. I will have to manage to leave everything else outside and continue to compete like this".
Italy – in a race saved almost in extremis, with the bad weather gone after an early morning with snow at high altitude and rain on the bottom of the Kandahar slope – also benefits from the fourth place of Sofia Goggia, the fifth of Laura Pirovano and the sixth of Marta Bassino, who came after a period of decline. The next World Cup race, the last before the World Championships, is Thursday in France with the night slalom of Courchevel and the return of the American champion Mikaela Shiffrin, back after injury.
